Looks can kill.
NOTE: This photo essay started as a part of my final project for photography class in 12th grade (April 2003). I had an idea before going to sleep one night about how it would be to live as a flower. Later, the idea developed on itself when my teacher allowed me to do a photo essay instead of a graphic design project for the final. I asked AnnElise to be my model. After shooting an entire roll I developed the film myself. I developed the actual photos with the school’s equipment. Since the exposures were not done by a machine or a professional they were a just a tiny bit scratched and dirty (filters and harsh equipment). You can see the contact sheet here. The original version was displayed at the art show in my school. Most of the people did not get this photo essay. Hopefully, looking at the title will give some clue. Model: AnnElise Canon AE-1 Program + Canon Lens FD 50mm 1.4 + Ilford HP5 Plus 400 ISO + Canon Cano Scan 30 + PSP7 (layering to represent the original). Comments
I like it very much... I think it's somewhat self explanatory once you give it time to sink in. Either way, the way her face moves forward and back and eventually away gives it a strange tug-at-the-heartstrings feel to it. Excellent, well-thought-out concept that elicits some real emotion on the viewer's part... rock on.
-- "Life is slipping away from me, it's not the way I thought it'd be." -Dope oh hyper this is great! i love the whole idea.
i'm stuck tho - can't decide if i like the b&w. it does bring out the feeling of the images, but color might have been nice as well. either way, one of the best things i've seen today. -- /// yes, she really is underway. What an intriguing concept ... and after reading your description, I'd say you succeeded tremendously.
-- Driving down the 405 again. :: photography :: poetry i think i understand it:
is it starting out with pic 1 as "being born", growing up gradually showing feeling and movement throughout pics 2-4, and slowly losing interest, movement and life in 5, and then "dying" in number 6? i'm sure i'm totally off but am i going in the right direction? what was the significance of the "flower"? just curious, its very intriguing to me to disect stuff like this i like it dude -- "Nobody likes beets, Dwight. You should grow something everybody does like. You should grow candy." - Michael Scott Nice job you done, considering how bad the photo lab can be... hence the scratches and stuff. I like the presentation, but kinda felt more like a storyboard of an abstract film- probably worked better as a photo essay than the photos by themselves. I think the stuff on them makes them look like a faded old photos, so it may add to your benefit. Good JOB!
-- "I've been a time when I was going to quit or retire, but the next day it was like, 'I can't really retire now because I really haven't done anything yet,' you know?" -Bob Dyan, Rolling Stone 882- My writings account [link] Very nice use of cropping! It almost has a sort of narative to it. Really nice.
